Welcome to Chateau Alpine, City of Los Angeles Cultural Historic Landmark #928. The topiary-lined walkway meanders through the central courtyard, inviting the visitor to slow down and absorb the dignified presence of the Norman Revival Architecture as they approach the unit. The complex was built in the waning years of the Great Depression, when even the best old-world craftsmen and high-quality building materials were plentiful and inexpensive. This allowed for a build quality at Chateau Alpine, both inside and out, that far surpasses today’s building standards. Real lath-and-plaster walls enhance auditory privacy, while the living room’s broken door pediment, dentilated crown moldings, and hardwood floors add a sense of genteel refinement. With the scale of the rooms and floorplan, 920 South Serrano lives more like a small house than a typical condominium.
